Fluctuations and Declines: Notes on the Economic Cycle during the Late Nineteenth Century

Abstract

The text examines the cyclical nature of capitalism during the second half of the nineteenth century (1848–1896), a period marked by sustained growth punctuated by deep crises. The global economy expanded through the revolution in transport, technological innovation, and abundant credit, shaping what became known as the “Age of Capital,” dominated by liberalism and global market integration. Yet overproduction, financial speculation, and fierce industrial competition culminated in the 1873 crash, which triggered a prolonged depression.

The analysis combines three theoretical perspectives—monetary, productive, and technological—to explain alternating phases of boom and contraction. The subsequent reaction of core states took the form of protectionist policies and imperial expansion, securing new markets, resources, and profitability. This shift signaled the transition toward the “Age of Empire,” the prelude to the geopolitical conflicts of the twentieth century.

The text concludes that crises are not anomalies within capitalism but inherent mechanisms of its operation. The fluctuations of the nineteenth century anticipated patterns that still persist, revealing the system’s capacity to adapt and regenerate through contradiction. The study highlights how the historical logic of expansion and crisis remains central to understanding the dynamics of the global capitalist economy today.
