Latin America and its identification at the beginning of the 21st century
Abstract
The International System is constantly changing. Its understanding and study requires an epistemological definition, because different positions can yield different results of analysis. Therefore, from a constructivist perspective we note how the relations between the different States find their coherence in the plane of ideas, maintaining that discourses are decisive in the configuration of materiality.
We consider that the interrelations of the States are marked by the identifications that their actors create cognitively with others in an intersubjective relationship. This arises from a battery of causes that give rise to certain discourses gaining strength and being disruptive, allowing new ways of understanding the world and of relating.
The shift to the left and the cooperative anti-imperialist positioning of Latin America at the beginning of the 21st century show that we are not facing a unipolar International system; but also how the region is characterized by a history of discursive struggle within its population, which generates and redefines very diverse identities. Such different discourses can give rise to antagonistic governments, which contributes to instability in international politics.
